Young Entrepreneurs Take Over the Tech Industry

By: Alex Duck

We all know about Mark Zuckerberg, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates, all young entrepreneurs who, despite their age, dedicated themselves to becoming successful tech innovators. As college students aspire to be the next great innovator, this dream of creating something for yourself once seemed very far off and more or less a pipe dream.

However, today, our millennial generation has started to become more independent than any prior generation. Entrepreneurs and tech-startup founders are getting younger and younger and the stereotypical picture of a mid 30’s business man in a blue blazer and slacks is quickly changing.

I asked, Dean of the Mccombs School Of Business at University of Texas,Thomas Gilligan , why he thought this is. Gilligan says that “millennials are eager to make their own pathways because they suspect the traditional ones may lead nowhere.” “Millennials see chaos, distrust of management, breaking of contracts and bad news associated with business,” he says. “They’ve watched their relatives get fired and their peers sit in cubicles and they think, ‘There has to be a better way’.”

Featured above are entrepreneurs who have overcome age and inexperience to become innovators in their field. From Logan Green, who founded the ridesharing company Lyft, at only 26 years old, or the famous David Karp, the billionaire who founded the mega successful blog platform, Tumblr. Grace Choi, at the age of 20, creating her company MINK, a 3D printing makeup company. Grace Choi, in interviews, jokes that she was the only in these corporate board meeting that couldn’t be offered a glass of wine, even though she was the boss. Ryan Schreiber, creating of Pitchfork Media, created the famous music magazine as a journalism grad project.

All of these entrepreneurs have been faced with a daunting task of taking on the work force and instead of climbing the corporate ladder, the decided to innovate on their and become their own boss. Maybe, millennials are realizing that starting a company, even if it crashes and burns, teaches them more in two years than sitting in a cubicle for 20 years.

Specifically in Austin, TX, Forbes magazine voted the Live Music Capital of The World the 5th best city in the country for tech startups. Austin’s famous start-up mentoring company/think tank at the Capital Factory is one big reason for this. Charles Haggas, founder of a variety of successful tech startups and creator of SEO and branding company Space Chimp Media, spoke to me about how to overcome age and to brand yourself in today’s industry. Haggas said, “Age is bullsh*t, your ideas are fresh and new, and the youth controls this country. Take your idea and tell everyone about it, everyone!” Capital Factory represents over 200 startups in Austin, TX and beyond. Capital Factory released a statistic that said 60% of tech startup founders that they have worked with are 27 or younger. In this growing technology age, it seems the millennials have the upper hand in independence and media literacy.

St. Edwards University’s very own Nathalie Phan has also made this list amongst young entrepreneurs. She founded Topper Radio Station and co-founded the online magazine and promotional company On Vinyl Music. Nathalie is a 21 year old Digital Media Management student at St. Edward’s and plans on going on to study digital law. Phan’s On Vinyl Music has had more than 100,000 page views since its introduction 3 months ago. She has already received backing from well-known corporations such as Spotify, Waterloo Records, Transmission Events, Tito’s Vodka, Raw Dawg Productions, and Attendance Records. Nathalie’s success is just beginning and she sat down with us in the On Vinyl Media Studio for some insight on On Vinyl Music and advice for young aspiring entrepreneurs.

13 Essential Albums to Have Before 2014 Comes to a Close (And Some You Shouldn’t)

By: Alex Duck

Coming from a collaboration of some very literate and well versed audiophiles, we have compiled a list of upcoming 2014 album releases that should be a must have before 2015 rolls around. 2014 has already been a big year for music, especially in the indie and hip-hop world. However, we found no real thread in great albums being released this year. This kind of trans-genre success is comforting to all of the creative artists out there losing faith in the business. Artists like the tUnE-yArDs, Phantogram, and even Childish Gambino and Miley Cyrus have taken on a second wind this album year reinvigorating their respective genres with successful long overdue albums. Despite more disappointing albums from otherwise superstars like Ed Sheeran’s “X”, and Avenged Sevenfold’s “Hail to the King”, 2014 has ushered in and spoiled new artists like Sam Smith, Echosmith, Chvrches, Bastille, Chainsmokers, Martin Garrix and even artists like Lorde who owe 2014 for their biggest year yet.

So here is the list of upcoming albums that are essential to your future collection.

Caribou- Our Love
Release Date: October 6th

Alternative electro fans have probably been anticipating this Dan Snaith synth masterpiece. Although I can’t promise a “masterpiece” per say, the sexy teaser for this fifth album leaves me very positive for October 6th.

Banks- Goddess
Release Date: September 8th

So I fell in love with the ambient R&B music off of the London EP. Recent singles have come from Jillian Banks out of Los Angeles such as “Brain” and “Beggin For Thread”. After she released her Vevo lyric video for Goddess, she had already topped herself in only 4 minutes and 1 second.

Frank Ocean- Unknown
Unknown

Alright so this is more of a hunch, so bare with me. Separate from OFWGKTA Frank Ocean has been spending summer jamming Channel Orange at various music festivals around the country. Frank Ocean, much like his celebrity counterparts have taken to social media commenting on the crisis is Ferguson, Missouri, however, on his Tumblr, he did slip a subtle afterword about a possible debut by the end of the year. Fingers crossed!

Alt-J - This is All Yours
Release Date: September 22nd

Lead singer Gus Unger- Hamilton’s quote pretty much says it all, “We pretty much learned from the reaction of the first record that we could get away with whatever we wanted musically.” After releasing two tracks from This is All Yours: “Hunger of the Pine” and “Every Other Freckle” anticipation for this mega-experimental album has blown up on almost every indie blog on the inter-webs

Cody Joe Tillman and the Wicked Truth - (Self Titled)
Release Date: September 23rd

So my bias comes into play here, but its ok, thats what blogging is all about.
“Showcasing a musical fusion of Jazz, Funk, Blues, Texas Country, and Alternative Rock, Cody Joe Tillman & The Wicked Truth is weaving a new sound that is sure to excite the masses hungry for a fresh listening experience.” Pretty enticing description eh? He is recording this album in my hometown of Houston, TX,  in my childhood candy shop, the historical SugarHill Studios. This album features great Houston and Texas talent, such as Glen Ackerman on bass and even Chet Roberts and Greg Upchurch from 3 Doors Down.

Lady Gaga and Tony Bennett- Cheek to Cheek
Release Date: September 23rd

Jazz aficionado Tony Bennett known for collaborating with artists like John Mayer, Carrie Underwood, Amy Winehouse (R.I.P) and Mariah Carey, is no stranger to taking otherwise genius pop artists into a taste of a whole new genre. However, Lady Gaga is no stranger to big band and jazz music claiming she feels more comfortable in jazz than in her usual produced pop. Lady Gaga has already sung with Tony on tracks such as “Anything Goes” and “I Can Give you Anything But Love” so this album will just be the icing on the cake. Tony Bennett was not short on compliments on this young diva, saying “She’s the biggest. I’ll tell you, I never met anyone with more talent than that lady.”

Interpol- El Pintor
Release Date: September 9th

Since the bands hiatus in 2011, I personally believed I had seen the last of this band. However, when all these track teasers came out for El Pintor I had discovered a new and reenergized Interpol. Black cover art and studio videos, this might be the best work yet.

Vance Joy- Dream Life Away
Release Date: September 9th

Vance Joy let his teaser video speak for itself. Buy this album, I am sure none of us will be disappointed.

Kendrick Lamar- TBA
Release Date: TBA

Alright, sorry again. Another hunch. After subtle tweets and studio logs, I refuse to believe Kendrick is just “chilling” in the studio with Dr. Dre, Tae Beast and Sounwave. After being featured on Flying Lotus’ new album (which will also appear on this list) I think Kendrick has something big in the works.

Flying Lotus - You’re Dead
Release Date: October 3rd

Flying Lotus released a complete track listing, with songs with excited collaborations from Snoop Dogg, Captain Murphy and Kendrick Lamar. My hip-hop specialist John Griffin believes this release will change hip-hop. The teaser video exhibits all of the music without lyrics from the whole album. Buckle up, the world has not heard hip hop like this.

TV On the Radio- Seeds
Release Date: November 18th

It has been 3 years since the bands last album after the death of their bassist. With lead singer Tunde Adebimpe view “Let’s make a couple of songs and see what happens.” Enough said.

Eminem - Shady XV
Release Date: November 28th

If I say this sucks, you are still going to buy it anyway.

Foo Fighters Sonic Highways
Release Date: November 10th

This isn’t like any of the other albums on this list. Foo Fighters made the jump over to film in their new HBO album series Sonic Highways. Dave Grohl had this to say in the teaser, “Doing something to make it new. You can tie all of these people and places together with these sonic highways. This is a musical map of America." They recorded in 8 different historical studios all around the world. This airs on HBO on November 10th.

-BONUS ROUND-
2014 Albums You Shouldn’t Buy and Ones You Should Delete

Wiz Khalifa- Blacc Hollywood

Wiz never seemed to earn the right to be a respected rapper. One of his biggest “hits” “Black and Yellow” was voted the worst song of 2011 by NPR. Although I think Blacc Hollywood is a musical improvement for Wiz, it still is bland and lacks any musical progression. The fact that he can rhyme “Uh-Uh” with “Uh-Uh” 18 times is a phenomenon. A Hip-hop album is not supposed to put you to sleep at a house party.

Foster the People- Supermodel

This upsets me to put here. Foster the People has definitely hit a steep decline after Torches. I had the chance to see them at a few different festivals this summer and I found myself walking away disappointed every time. I wanted so badly to fall in love with them live, even if their records were weak. Unfortunately they were always subpar.

Coldplay- Ghost Stories

The amount of hype over this album made the let down even worse. Tired lyrics, underwhelming song construction. I feel like Coldplay completely undershoots the bar that they continue to lower for themselves.

Taylor Swift- 1989

Apparently Taylor feels as if she has to compete with artists like Ariana Grande and Jessie J. The addition of MIDI brass instruments and hip hop beats turned a once genre controlling artist to a conformist who now has to compete with artists who’s songs sound exactly the same to hers.

Dinosaur Jr. Lead, J Mascis, Releases Second Acoustic Solo Album

By: Nattie Gonzalez

Primarily known as lead singer, guitarist and song writer for Dinosaur Jr., J Mascis released his second solo album on Aug. 26, 2014 entitled Tied to a Star. This second solo album features appearances by Ken Maiuri (front man for the 90’s group Ribboncandy), Pall Jenkins (founder of The Black Heart Procession), Mark Mulcahy (former front-man for Miracle Legion) and Chan Marshall (leading lady for the amazing Cat Power).
The album opens with “Me Again,” a simple and gentle acoustic melody that takes on themes similar to Bon Iver. With a clean picking pattern and high pitched vocals, Mascis pulls off this neat sound even better than he pulled off the heavy electric guitar sound that he did for so long.

The album is pretty static in style, acoustic from beginning to end, with occasional tempo changes. In his track “Stumble,” the use of electric guitar and a din drone brings back some of  his old styles. With heavy drums and a light electrified solo guitar riff, this track is the most different from any of his other tracks on the album, “Stumble” poses as a good shift in tone and gives the listener a refreshing sound from the other, primarily acoustic, tracks.
The use of double stops in “Drifter” ties the album together and shows off Mascis’ stellar guitar skills.
Closing the album with “Better Plane,” Mascis brings back the solo guitar and a perfect mix of fuzz and folk style guitar to tie the album together. Overall, his vocals and skillful picking makes for a nice collection of tunes.
The natural themes that were introduced in his first solo album, Several Shades of Why, are resurfaced and continued in Tied to a Star. With no clear narrative, this primarily sound-based album has proven to be a continuation of his 2011 solo album. If a third solo album is released, it will definitely be a unnecessary continuation.
It’s always inspiriting to see artists do solo albums that differ so much from their original sound, but the difference that J Mascis brings to the table is that he doesn't abandon his roots.

Artist Spotlight: The Oh Hello's

By: Alex Duck

So this brother and sister duo might not be new to you guys, but they have just recently made it onto my airwaves in the last few months. This Texas group was a diamond in the rough for me and can't believe I hadn't stumbled upon them sooner. I actually got the oppurtunity to see them at Houston's Free Press Summer Festival, and their show was nothing less than entertaining. Tyler and Maggie Heath may be the front man and woman for this group, but that didn't stop them from having 11 musicians on stage ranging from accordion players, to banjo players, to random men hitting floor toms. All of those joyous noise came to together to make something I really haven't heard before. A mix of modern folk, a little bit of Texas twang and a contemporary Christian influence. Needless to say I had to dive deeper to find out about this group who's name was inviting enough already.
So who are Tyler Heath and Maggie Heath?
This eclectic folk rock group reigns from San Marcos, Texas, yet another reason they grew near and dear to my heart.
They created their first self named E.P in 2011. The track Lay Me Down was the first song I ever listened to and when Maggie opens up with her first note I was immediately enticed. These two seem to have mastered the two part harmony and compliment each other like.... SIBLINGS (duh). They seem to take turns singing lead on each song, seamlessly switching roles.

So when showing them to my friends I tried to think of a band I could pair them with, and that was a task in itself. However, if I had to group them or have them cobill with someone for a show it would be artists like The Head and the Heart, Sufjan Stevens, Josh Doyle, or even the Lumineers. The common thread between all these groups is the simplicity of the music, the poetic lyrics, the gimmick free live show, and certain kind of transcendent folk feel. Not soul music, but music for the soul.

I wouldn't be surprised if you stumble upon them on NPR's All Songs Considered the coming time. They seem to be entering a music scene that actually has a craving for this kind of music. Not music you can get drunk to, not music you fist pump to (well i guess no one is stopping you) but rather music you can dance to and just feel physically and emotionally better than you did before the song started. Artists with Christian faith influence like the Heath siblings usually get piled into the music worlds form of limbo and get stuck only playing on comtemporary Christian radio stations called "The Air" or "The Message." However, The Oh Hello's have seem to break that faith block of the music world and take there inspired songs to a more mainstream audience.  I am glad this form of feel good music has crept its way back into the scene.
Keep doing what your doing Tyler and Maggie, I am a fan.

We are Back: Love, War and Music

So sitting here feeling another coffee fueled creative wave at 1:00 am, I thought I would start this blog back up. Except this "resurrection" so to speak will be a little different than my previous blog.

Seeing as that I am about to call Austin, Texas my new home I want to explore commercial music not just as a product but more so as a culture. Considering a musicians point of view as well as a listener and a fan and even a student.

I will travel over genre boundaries to look far and wide to find new music for you to love or to hate and also give my two cents and music you already know.

The point of this blog is not to bombard hard-working artists with criticism and hate or even smother them in words of adoration and worship. My purpose here is to uncover the artist behind the songs and the person behind the album art. Even though I like how Watsky put it when he said "Kill a Hipster Save Your Hood" my approach isn't necessarily as violent. Although I do apologize in advance hipsters, I am trying to bring your "obscure" music to a more mainstream light, but I promise I will leave your favorite coffee shops, thrift shops and record stores alone (for now).

So if you like music, opinions without filters, or even just like to read things that are occassionally humorous, please keep up with my blog.

Hope you enjoy this journey with me!
